La intención de la presente investigación es seguir los pasos iniciados por Luis M. Mansilla con su tesis doctoral titulada Apuntes de viaje al interior del tiempo (Colección arquia/tesis núm.10), substituyendo el viaje del Gran Tour a Italia por el viaje iniciático a Oriente, y en concreto a Japón.
Se recopilan los principales protagonistas de la mirada occidental sobre Japón y con ellos sus apuntes, dibujos y fotografías de viaje. Se estudian primero sus puntos de partida, las razones o casualidades que les llevaron a viajar a Japón. En un segundo tiempo se analizan los itinerarios individuales de viaje por el país, cómo cada uno elige los sitios que visitar. A continuación se investigan los puntos donde se entrecruzan las rutas individuales, cuando dos o más miradas se encuentran observando un mismo objeto en un mismo lugar pero en una época distinta. En fin, se sigue a los personajes estudiados por un tramo de camino más, de viaje y de vida, para observar cómo aplican la lección japonesa a sus obras.
El objetivo es poder comparar y confrontar varios viajes y varias miradas de arquitectos sobre edificios, jardines o aspectos más inaprensibles de la cultura japonesa. Ofrecer un análisis transcultural de las reacciones que las figuras claves de la arquitectura moderna han dejado dispersos antes, durante y al regresar de sus viajes a Japón.
Para eso es necesario empezar por un estudio bibliográfico, un análisis comparativo, y una investigación de campo salpicada de encuentros con expertos y con familiares, eso tanto en las propias patrias de los personajes estudiados, en sus archivos, como en Japón, visitando los mismos sitios que ellos.
Este estudio comparativo contempla esencialmente a Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Neutra, Bruno Taut, Charlotte Perriand, Walter Gropius, Le Corbusier, Miguel Fisac, Carlo Scarpa y Steven Holl. Gran parte de su carácter inédito reside en el hecho de que su autora maneje perfectamente los idiomas maternos de todos esos personajes, sea el inglés, alemán, francés, castellano e italiano, y pueda por lo tanto tener una comprensión directa del material analizado. La elección del castellano para la redacción, además de, como ya se ha explicado, tener una vocación de continuidad con el texto de Luis M. Mansilla, ofrece por primera vez a la población hispanohablante la narración de algunos viajes que permanecen sin traducir al día de hoy.
