Abstract en inglés:

The intention of this study is to follow the steps initiated by Luis M. Mansilla with his PhD thesis entitled “Apuntes de viaje al interior del tiempo” (Travel Notes in the heart of time, arquia/tesis Collection number 10)), substituting the Grand Tour south to Italy with the initiation journey to the East, more specifically to Japan.
The main protagonists of the Western gaze on Japan and their notes, drawings and photographs are gathered. We first study the starting points, the reasons or accidents that led them on the tracks of a trip to Japan. Secondly, we analyze the individual travel routes across the country; how each of the architects chooses the sites to visit. Then we look at the points where their paths intersect, when several eyes meet whilst observing a same object in the same place, but in a different period. Finally, we follow the studied characters for another part of their journey, of travel or of life, in order to observe how they apply what they learned from Japan on their work.
The objective is to compare and contrast several trips and gazes of architects on the buildings, gardens and more intangible aspects of the Japanese culture. It is a cross-cultural analysis of the reactions that the key figures of modern architecture have scattered before, during and after their travel to Japan.
Therefore, it is necessary to start with a literature review and a comparative analysis of texts, followed by a field study first in the original homelands of the surveyed architects, consulting their archives or meeting their relatives, and then in Japan, visiting the same places as they did.
This study essentially contemplates the following characters: Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Neutra, Bruno Taut, Walter Gropius, Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand, Miguel Fisac, Carlo Scarpa and Steven Holl. A large part of the originality of the research lies in the fact that its author perfectly masters the native languages of all the studied architects, namely English, German, French, Italian and Spanish and can therefore have a direct understanding of the analyzed material. The choice of the Spanish language for writing, in addition to the vocation of giving continuity to the text of Luis M. Mansilla, offers for the first time to the attention of Spanish-speaking readers the narrative of travels, which remain without translation until today.

Abstract en castellano:

Este estudio comparativo contempla esencialmente a Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Neutra, Bruno Taut, Charlotte Perriand, Walter Gropius, Le Corbusier, Miguel Fisac, Carlo Scarpa y Steven Holl.
