9 septiembre 2016

The ceremony for the 2nd Research in New York Grant, promoted by the Arquia Foundation and the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando was held on Thursday, September 8, 2016.

The jury of the second edition of the New York Grant -formed by Fernando de Terán (Director of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando), Nogues Montserrat Teixidor (Patroness of the Arquia Foundation), Luis Fernandez-Galiano (architect, academician of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando) and Gerardo García-Ventosa (Director of the Arquia Foundation Arquia) - met on Monday June 20, 2016 at the Arquia headquarters in Madrid.

Unanimously, the jury decided to award the grant for research in New York 2016 to the project Delirious New York: 40th Year Update , by Lys Villalba Rubio , an architect graduated from ETSAM. The following alternate projects were also selected: La cara B de Manhattan. New York's counterculture and its impact on housing policy , by architect Andrea Gimeno; Transatlantic Discourses: Lotus, Architectures and Oppositions Bis (1970-1985) , by the architect Alejandro Valdivieso; and Reference Guide to re_naturalize spaces by the architect J. Giovani Acebedo.

The jury was satisfied with the overall quality of the works presented, as well as the curriculum of many of the participants. The aim of the project by Lys Villalba is to update a mythical book of architectural theory, the work by Rem Koolhaas, Delirious New York . The jury was impressed by the graphic talent shown in other research projects of the author, such as the one held recently in Tokyo and the architect's exceptional CV.

The jury also decided to select the proposal by Andrea Gimeno for its extremely stimulating exploration of New York's counterculture affecting housing, an approach of contemporary interest. The project by Alejandro Valdivieso completes his doctoral thesis on the magazine Arquitecturas Bis with the transatlantic bonds of its components and, especially, with the magazine Oppositions , in addition to the brilliant CV of the author, who just graduated from Harvard. On the other hand, J. Giovani Acevedo's guide for the restoration of nature in the city underscores a matter of utmost importance and contemporary interest.

Lys Villalba received the grant from Javier Navarro Martinez, President of the Arquia Foundation and José Luis García del Busto, Secretary General of the Royal Academy, at the ceremony held at the Academy on Thursday 8 September, which brought together Board members of the Arquia Foundation Arquia, scholars and representatives of institutions in the field of architecture from the Community of Madrid.

The deadline for registration for this edition was closed on May 31, 2016 with a total of 65 candidates selected. The high number of call participants reflects the great interest generated by the initiative, and reaffirms the need for a grant of these characteristics.
