INTELLECTUAL ENJOYMENT IN ARCHITECTURE

THANK YOU!

Just like The Final Meeting by Sandor Marai, they offered me a class, perhaps the last one? at my School of Architecture of Madrid, as a culmination of my teaching time of more than 40 years. I stress my School, because the first thing I want to do is give my thanks (and there are so many people to thank!) for the fact that the School Board have unanimously appointed me as Professor Emeritus. This appointment will take effect in the near future after this joyful retirement. I hope that God will give me sufficient strength to carry out the work entrusted to me as Professor Emeritus with enthusiasm; it is through this work that I intend to continue serving the School.
Today, I would also like to publicly thank our University, UPM, for the Excellent Teaching Award for best professor at UPM. An award that many professors (with so many or more merits than me) of this School deserve, many of whom are here today at what is considered to be the best School of Architecture in the world.
And just as when I entered the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando almost three years ago and my speech then was based on Beauty, on "Searching tirelessly for Beauty", I wanted this speech today to focus on the following topic: “About intellectual enjoyment”, an enjoyment that is produced precisely when Beauty is achieved in one of its many manifestations, and particularly in Architecture, the most beautiful work in the world! »
