The more transparent traverse delves into the city streets as a tool for understanding and design cities and territories. We look for more appropriate ways of working to get their significant features and be able to rethink their project.
Respect to Cordoba, Malaga and Granada, beyond other urban elements related and approaches to their general form, the thesis focus on the importance of the "act of looking" that determines both what is regarded as the way to do.
The selected road from each city, the street-cities, can be a major urban elements at the configuration, operation and meaning of these cities. Few elements would bear such a responsibility. In some cases they appear like true spine of the urban area of the city, hence the stress on them is a necessary question, and in other cases, urgent.
The thesis provides a balance between two actions. The first aims to broaden the concept of street intensely, to places that connect with the infrastructure, the landscape, symbolic or geographically, further consolidate its role as architectural, esthetic and functional. The second seeks to understand the example by exploring cities or prospective analysis of three key lines in a merger between the learning of its evolution, current behavior and its projection into the future.
The most synthetic definition of street-city could be to the set of urban elements that agglutinate around a main passage and which are better than any other, the balance between past and future of the city, between tradition and opportunity.
In relation to the related discipline, the thesis brings the look of the city that the 20th century Urban always treated as a central issue, with valuable examples like the work of Rossi, Aymonino or Gregotti, or more specifically the de Sola-Morales, Gandelsonas or Parcerisa. The city tends to remain blurred in a current context in which regional scales and sprawling cities account for all the debates. This work puts it to the modern street as the protagonist, and renews and incorporates a very broad universe of methodologies and a strong ability cross-street that makes crucial elements.
From a methodological point of view, there is the vision of these cities from the perspective of their journey more transparent. It used and presents a new mapping as a method of approach to urban realities; check its condition and results of their planning throughout its history, thus incorporating it into a discussion of its form and its transformation processes. The drawing is used by exploiting its expressive possibilities, breaking and locking the urban components sequentially. The comparative point of view that not explicit, which plays along the argument, the geography, history and dynamics, landscapes, spaces and architectures, from multiple scales.
Those approaches are chosen to be considered the most interesting for each city, the sum of these offers a variety that can speak to the multidimensional role of the architect. Like a Venn diagram or a leak Bach, the three lines methodological presented differences and similarities that generate interlaced areas of intersection and connection.
The thesis has consciously three types of objetives: the contribution to architecture and urbanism understood as techniques and disciplines, the contribution to teaching and learning of urban design, and finally, the contribution to the understanding of these cities of Andalusia, its immediate territory, internal logic and opportunities of improvement.
Multiple work with spaces, times and systems of the thesis provides access to a wide range of conclusions that refer to thoughts and concrete ideas on the three urban streams studied in Córdoba, Malaga and Granada, and from a general point of view it speaks mainly of the ability of the architecture and the urbanism to understand, describe and propose constructive development of our cities and major lines as systems that can structure a lot of kinds of relations.
