La obra del británico James Stirling (1924‑1992) representa uno de los mejores registros de la arquitectura de la segunda mitad del siglo XX, del periodo ideológicamente convulso y formalmente conflictivo que abarca desde la crisis moderna hasta la consolidación y posterior caída de la posmodernidad. Un tiempo que sus formas, cambiantes y coyunturales, fueron capaces de capturar, confirmando la indudable importancia histórica y cultural de su arquitectura, si bien, aparentemente, a expensas de su capacidad para influir sobre la práctica arquitectónica contemporánea.

Permanencias en la arquitectura de James Stirling es una investigación que pretende contradecir este supuesto, que indaga en los términos que hacen posible la extraordinaria variedad y brillantez de su trabajo, pero aceptando la incoherencia estructural de la misma. Se identifican para ello los conceptos, herramientas y mecanismos proyectuales que, matizados o manipulados, se emplean de manera constante a lo largo de las cuatro décadas que abarca su carrera y que constituyen la metodología con la cual el arquitecto se enfrenta a un contexto de duda. Esta metodología que se revela, por encima de sus formas, como la aportación fundamental de Stirling al desarrollo de la cultura arquitectónica de su tiempo, anticipando y definiendo los términos —de nuevo— en que se producirá la revolución posmoderna. Estos términos siguen hoy, aunque no lo creamos, de plena vigencia.

The work of British architect James Stirling (1924–1992) constitutes one of the best records of the architecture of the second half of the 20th century, an ideologically tumultuous and formally contested period that witnessed the crisis of modernism and the rise and fall of postmodernism. It was a time that Stirling’s shifting and conjunctural forms embodied, making his architecture of undeniable historical and cultural importance albeit, apparently, at the expense of his capacity to influence contemporary architectural practice.
Permanencies in the Architecture of James Stirling is a study that endeavours to refute this assumption, a study that explores the circumstances that made possible the extraordinary variety and brilliance of his work while accepting its structural incoherence. To do so, it identifies the design concepts, tools and mechanisms that, finessed or manipulated, he employed time and again over the four decades of his career and that constitute the methodology with which the architect addressed a context of doubt. This methodology reveals itself to be Stirling’s fundamental contribution to the architectural culture of his time, more so even than his forms, presaging and defining the terms – once again – on which the postmodern revolution would be built, terms that, although it is perhaps uncomfortable to acknowledge, remain in place today.
