  • This thesis is basically a study of the history of recent developments in structural design.

It is based on the assumption that the search for efficiency and optimization of structures, undertaken in the seventeenth century at the beginning of the Modern Age, has continued until today and led, in the last 60 years, to the emergence of a new level of complexity in geometry, design, calculation and construction of architectural projects. It also implies that this search has as a main objective the building of beautiful, rational and economic structures.

Specifically, it intends to make an analysis of how the search for efficiency and optimization of structures has evolved over the second half of the twentieth and early twenty-first century under the influence of some new concepts arising from the development of scientific theories related to the General Systems Theory, such as complexity, random, self-organization, emergence, non-linearity and fractality.

The work was divided into three parts in order to analyze the recent evolution of three structural types that, even though they do not cover all the structural types used in architecture, they have been considered as representative of what happened in the recent evolution of the discipline. These types have been named as truss structures, surface structures and framed structures.

In recent research on the efficiency of architectural structures there is a recurring adoption of the concepts of self-organization and fractality. In recent research on the optimization of architectural structures, regarded as one of the many building components that need to be coordinated in an architectural work, there is a tendency to strongly consider the design of integrated devices capable of responding to multiple functions, to the hierarchical spatial coordination of the architectural programs with the gaps that the structure generates and to the algorithmic design.
