Un quart de casa in la Barceloneta

The plots' sub-division in La Barceloneta produces a singular type of apartment known as “a quarter of a house”, with an area is 35 sqm. These buildings are until 36 meters high and have no option to include an elevator. This is the main architectural problem of La Barceloneta: 25% of the total amount of population are elders and 86% of the apartments are quarters of a house. Because of the reduced size of these apartments, neighbors tend to spend a big part of the day on the public space, so the goal of this proposal is to make accessible their own houses and facilitate the inside-outside transition.

The project rethinks the neighborhood as if it was one building. Instead of proposing a single elevator per building, we build an elevator in one out of four streets, giving a solution to the elderly population percentage. The elevators are placed at the end of the street, creating a terrace that is linked to the corridor, which gives access to the different flats.
