El trabajo Cartagena y su Campo: historia y proyecto, desarrolla un estudio monográfico de esta ciudad y del territorio circundante, desde un enfoque urbanístico-arquitectónico. Esta mirada sobre las formas de lo urbano y sus procesos, conjuga la preocupación por una interpretación de la historia urbana que ha construido el territorio que habitamos y la necesaria formulación de ideas para proyectar su futuro. El trabajo sobre este enclave del sudeste peninsular permite indagar en la idea de la ciudad y el territorio como una cristalización de larga duración

La segunda parte del título nos habla de su anclaje simultáneo en dos marcos de estudio, la historia y el proyecto urbano, íntimamente ligados entre sí. Se trata de narrar una (de las posibles) historia urbana de Cartagena, desde la arquitectura, es decir, desde su materialidad física modelada por la acción de proyectar.

En muchos aspectos, se sitúa entre aquellas aportaciones sobre lo urbano que enfocan los aspectos morfológicos y atienden al soporte estructural, social, cultural o económico, desde una visión evolutiva. No presenta una organización cronológica ni un marco temporal delimitado: los episodios relatados (ápices) se organizan según una narración fragmentaria y sintética de la ciudad-puerto de Cartagena y su Campo construidos durante veinticinco siglos.

A partir de aquí, la tesis inquiere en la compresión del espacio y sus relaciones, desde el trabajo conjunto sobre los documentos gráficos, la planimetría, y las aportaciones de otras disciplinas. Para ello se han seleccionado algunos lugares y momentos de inflexión, planes o proyectos de transformación del contexto urbano y territorial, a lo largo del tiempo y a las diferentes escalas.

El documento se estructura en tres bloques:

- el primero, dedicado a la contextualización del caso de estudio en las grandes escalas, las globales, la mediterránea, la comarcal, es decir, las escalas de la geografía; seguida de una introducción de los acontecimientos históricos, decisiones técnicas y procesos socio-culturales que han definido el espacio cartagenero, a modo de epítome de los episodios urbanos y territoriales que el segundo bloque abordará. Una vez presentado  el objeto de estudio se procede a la discusión del marco teórico, definiendo la metodología eminentemente gráfica, (se han elaborado un centenar de planos inéditos) y estableciendo un diálogo con las disciplinas que trabajan sobre lo urbano a lo largo de los dos últimos siglos, a partir de la selección de autores y narraciones transversales a las áreas del conocimiento.

-el segundo, agrupa una serie de capítulos que prestan atención a las estructuras urbano-territoriales, a las acciones, las relaciones y la lógica situacional, construidas por la superposición de formas derivadas de los intereses, anhelos, creencias, etc. de cada sociedad a lo largo del tiempo. Esta historia urbana de Cartagena, realizada en clave proyectiva, es una visión interpretativa, condensada y discontinua, donde algunos aspectos y lugares del ámbito de estudio, se han situado en el centro de la discusión y otros han sido relegados a secundarios o periféricos. Los capítulos se construyen desde la narración de las sensibilidades espaciales locales: 1. Cartagena, una ciudad-puerto del Estado, 2. La extensión de la cruceta fundacional y del centro histórico, 3. Una lectura de la estructura espacial de Cartagena, 4. La ciudad de la segunda mitad del siglo XX.: dos vías arteriales, 5. Transformaciones recientes: entre la recuperación histórica y el consumo turístico.

La constelación de lugares, la red de espacios cotidianos, la consistencia de la agrupación y el valor estético de la repetición, transitan los cinco capítulos, aportando al tema central de cada uno de ellos, el conjunto de piezas que construyen el paisaje donde habitamos y los espacios donde desarrollamos la vida diaria. Los rasgos culturales y las identidades locales fundamentan la discusión.

-el tercero, aglutina las aportaciones derivadas de los dos primeros y un segundo conjunto de conclusiones gráficas, denominadas Cartografías Tácticas.  Nueve mapas que  son una construcción de la realidad, inédita, mediante los hallazgos de la historia urbana de la Ciudad que pretenden ser una hoja de ruta del futuro de Cartagena y su Campo, en el corto, medio y largo plazo: 1 El corredor litoral, 2 Fisonomía del Mar Menor, 3 Fisonomía de Cartagena. Intensidades y flujos, 4 Calles mayores de la ciudad histórica, el ensanche y los barrios, 5 La ciudad histórica y el trasdós -o el traspaso- de la muralla, 6 Intervenciones de Reforma Interior/Proyectos para El Molinete: activar el vacio o llenarlo, 7 Sección aurea, 8 Secciones de Levante. ,9 Fachada marítima.

Cartagena and its Countryside: history and design is a monographic study of the city and its surrounding territory, from and urban and architectural perspective. This focus on urban shape and its processes joins up concerns regarding an interpretation of the urban history that makes up the territory we inhabit and the necessary formulation of ideas in order to design its future. Working on this enclave on the southeastern corner of the Iberian Peninsula allows us to explore the idea of city and territory as a long standing crystallization of human settlement. 

The second part of the title speaks of this thesis' simultaneous anchoring within two frameworks of study, history and urban design. The idea is to narrate a (possible) urban history of Cartagena, from the point of view of architecture—that is, from the standpoint of its physical materiality shaped by de act of design.

In many ways, this research is part of the series contributions concerning the urban realm  that focus on morphological aspects and take into account its structural, social, cultural and economic framework with an evolutionary approach. It does not put forward a chronological sequence nor does it present a specific time period. The episodes it narrates (apexes) are organized according to a fragmentary and synthetic narrative of the city-port of Cartagena and its Countryside, a space constructed over the course of twenty five centuries.

Stemming from this, the thesis inquires into the understanding of the space and its relationships, based on studies of graphic material, plans and the contributions of other disciplines. To do so, a series of places and inflection points have been chosen, plans or projects that transformed the urban and territorial context over time and at different scales.

The document is structured into two blocks:

-the first part is dedicated to contextualizing the case study at a broader, geographical level, at the global, Mediterranean and regional scales, and it is followed by an introduction of the historical events, policy decisions and socio-cultural processes that have defined the space of Cartagena, as a kind of epitome of the urban and territorial episodes that are addressed in the second part. The theoretical framework presented is defined  mainly by a graphic methodological approach (one hundred plans have been specifically drawn up) and a dialogue is established with the disciplines that have addressed urban issues over the past two centuries, based on a selection of authors and narratives that are transversal to these areas of knowledge.

-the second part are chapters that focus on urban-territorial structures, actions, relationships and situational logics constructed from the superimposition of forms that have derived from the different interests, desires, beliefs, etc. of society over time. This urban history of Cartagena, narrated from the point of view of design, is an interpretative, condensed and discontinuous vision. Some of its aspects and the places chosen have been placed at the center of the debate while others have been relegated to secondary or peripheral levels. The chapters follow a sequence that tells the story of local spatial sensitivities: 1. Cartagena, a city-port belonging to the State, 2. The expansion of the foundational crossroads and of the historic center, 3. An interpretation of Cartagena's spatial structure, 4. The city of the second half of the 20th century: two main arteries, 5. Recent transformations: between historic recovery and touristic consumption.

The constellation of places, the network of everyday spaces, the consistency of groupings and the aesthetic value of repetition cross all five chapters, giving them each their central themes. These places make up the ensemble of pieces that construct the landscape we inhabit and the spaces where our daily lives are carried out.  Cultural traits and local identities set the tone of the discussion.

-the third part puts together the information gathered in the first two and lays out a second group of graphical conclusions called Tactical Cartographies. These nine maps are a completely new construct of reality built upon findings regarding the urban history of the City. They hope to become a roadmap for the future of Cartagena and its Countryside in the short, middle and long term: 1 The coastal corridor, 2 Features of the Mar Menor, 3 Features of Cartagena.
