This book on the architecture of José María García de Paredes (Seville 1924-Madrid 1990), was conceived as a tableau presenting the works of architecture through the eyes of different authors to constitute a compendium in the guise of a single choral feature. Like a tableau or small scene where several stories are recounted in a serial explanatory sequence, each chapter is personal and stands alone as the characters escape the hands of the narrator who merely weaves the single stories together.
The twelve authors of this tableau are related in different ways to the works analysed and, with three decades of hindsight, present these works’ different relationships as the sheen of time sets on the chuches of Vitoria, Málaga (Stella Maris) and Almendrales and the auditoriums in Granada and Madrid. However, the apparent variations on the same theme for the ensemble of works selected all pay the same attention to what surrounds each design. In other words, the different authors examine this architecture’s ideas and ethos as well as essencial issues such as the relationship between tradition and modernity, architecture and other technical or artistic disciplines, and imagination and reality.
In tribute to the thirtieth anniversary of his decease, this book was printed on February 6, 2020.
