In only a few of architectural examples we can see in such an emphatic features in the Washington Monument we show: it is the tallest stone structure all around the world, it is for the American people the symbol of his country, it is part of the capital from the genesis of it, even before the death of the George Washington, it is a architecture work that evolves from complex to simple, it has been a historical process of construction and surrounding circumstances that make it an object of unquestionable appeal and interest for the study.

The lack of a monument, at once so well known is the starting point for conducting a review of it from different points of view.

The closeness that produces that we all recognize immediately the Washington Monument, American symbol and the ignorance that we all have about it. Among the first issues of interest are questions like, Why things have become what they are? Why the call to be a great symbol and more renowned that the Statue of Liberty, watches silently form its privileged position and height?

The meeting point for understanding the true architecture, is the architectural design. Only the study of all the events, historical, political, cultural, technical, social, ... that surrounding a specific architecture will truly understand it. This requires that all these factors need to find their space in the process of this thesis, not dispense with it the opportunity to talk about architecture, without sacrificing personal concerns and proposals. the intensity and specificity of the architectural object to research makes it possible.

In architecture it is manifest the presence of certain objects  that transcend their own construction, buildings that are magnets for people and that is linking to them. Cases are found in our memory and there are  part of ourselves. One of these architectural examples is the Washington Monument.

Given its peculiarities - dimensional features, documents, construction,...- it has been considered a process of decomposition of the problem in partial visions, in a Cartesian way, allowing independent readings while parallel and complementary.

To obtain this final result, the thesis is divided into several distinct parts, although undoubtedly interrelated, intended to be understood by separately and together, without any of the findings is hampered by the lack or existence of reading in its totality.

The WAMO Competition or National Ideas Competition for the Washington Monument Grounds in Washinton D.C, which was just solved the first phase with more than 500 participants, 24 selected and a multitude of proposals for the area of the MALL, shows the continual actuality of the issue and it  is linked to the Thesis presented today to the competition arquia/tesis, Structural and Constructive Study of the Washington monument was the title of the thesis passed in December 2009.

En pocas arquitecturas se reúnen de un modo tan rotundo las características que en el Washington Monument se nos muestran: ser la estructura de piedra más alta del mundo, ser para el pueblo estadounidense el símbolo de su país, haber formado parte de la capital desde su génesis mucho antes de los comienzos de la construcción de la misma, incluso previamente a la muerte de George Washington,  ser una obra de arquitectura que evoluciona de lo complejo a lo sencillo, haber tenido un proceso histórico de construcción y circunstancias que lo rodean que hacen de él un objeto de indudable atractivo e interés para su estudio.

El desconocimiento de un monumento, a la vez tan conocido, es el punto de partida para la realización de un repaso del mismo desde diversos puntos de vista.

La cercanía que a todos nos produce el reconocer de inmediato el Washington Monument, símbolo norteamericano por excelencia y la ignorancia que del mismo todos tenemos. Entre las primeras cuestiones de interés surge la pregunta de ¿por qué las cosas han llegado a ser como son? ¿por qué el llamado a ser gran símbolo y más renombrado que la Estatua de la Libertad, vigila silencioso desde su privilegiada posición y altura?

El punto de encuentro para el entendimiento de la verdadera arquitectura, es el proyecto arquitectónico. Únicamente el recorrido a través de todos los acontecimientos; históricos, políticos, culturales, técnicos, sociales, etc. que rodean a una arquitectura concreta permitirá comprenderla verdaderamente. Ello obliga a hacer que todos estos factores encuentren su espacio en el proceso de la presente tesis, sin prescindir por ello de la oportunidad de hablar de arquitectura; sin renunciar a inquietudes y propuestas personales.  La intensidad y concreción del objeto arquitectónico a investigar lo hace posible.

En arquitectura se manifiesta la presencia de determinados objetos que trascienden su propia construcción, edificaciones que resultan imanes para las personas y que se vinculan a ellas. Son casos que se encuentran en nuestra memoria y que forman parte de nosotros mismos, y de lo que somos capaces de llegar a ser. Uno de estos ejemplos arquitectónicos es el Washington Monument.

Dadas sus características peculiares –dimensionales, documentales, constructivas, etc.-, se ha considerado un proceso de descomposición del problema en visiones parciales que, al modo cartesiano, permitan hacer lecturas independientes y al tiempo paralelas y complementarias.

Para la obtención de este resultado final, la Tesis se estructura en diferentes partes claramente diferenciadas, aunque indudablemente interrelacionadas, que pretenden poder ser comprendidas por separado y de modo conjunto, sin que ninguna de las apreciaciones quede mermada por la falta o existencia de la lectura en su totalidad.

El Concurso Internacional para los jardines del Washington Monument en Washington D.C., del cual se acaba de resolver la primera fase con más de 500 participantes, 24 seleccionados y con multitud de propuestas para esa zona del MALL de la capital americana, nos da muestra de la continua  actualidad del tema y se liga a la tesis doctoral que se presenta  hoy al concurso Arquia/Tesis, Estudio Estructural y Constructivo del Washington Monument era el título de la tesis superada en diciembre de 2009.
