Un posible enunciado de la hipótesis abordada a lo largo de lo que resultó un voluminoso trabajo: Entender los espacios libres «naturales» -o con capacidad para serlo- en la ciudad como piezas de un «sistema», más que como pulmones, bellos decorados o estándares, puede contribuir a fortalecerlos a ellos mismos así como su papel en el entramado urbano, un papel biológico, social y en definitiva urbano. Se ha pretendido defender una idea, una forma de mirar, de comprender -ya sea para actuar, o no-, más que un mecanismo reglado, tipificado, si bien a lo largo del camino se han hallado tanto tipos, tan precisamente reglados como desnaturalizados, como ideas más o menos abstractas del verde a las que se ha intentado encauzar en forma de red.

La opción para corroborar la validez de la hipótesis se puede decir, simplificando, que ha sido histórica, y este rastreo agradecido nos ha devuelto múltiples pistas para sostenerla. Teniendo una idea de lo que se buscaba, se fueron tanteando y constatando: - la permanencia del sistema a lo largo de la historia; -y la permanencia en las ciudades, una permanencia ésta, que por propia definición, si se cumple, debe ser amplificación y ramificación junto con la ciudad en que enraíza. El orden de la narración ha sido histórico pero simultáneamente se fue anclando en las ciudades en las que florece el Sistema, intentando con ello corroborar esa permanencia en las mismas a lo largo del tiempo. Se trata de ver cómo y porqué la ciudad se nutre del sistema y viceversa.

Los tres volúmenes o partes en que se organiza el texto tienen que ver básicamente con grandes etapas, digamos siglos XIX – XX - XXI, aunque las transiciones siempre son borrosas y yuxtapuestas. A esta compartimentación se superpone otra en clave de las ciudades observadas, de hecho algunas ya concentran la atención de determinados momentos, más que cualquier personaje o corriente; si no hay ciudades a las que servir, no hay hipótesis que verificar. Y como no podría ser de otro modo, hay también una historia paralela de personajes, por acción práctica o teórica, proyectual o gestora. Posiblemente la principal riqueza de este trabajo esté en el despliegue simultáneo de historias y lugares (tiempos y espacios con nombres propios), de aquí y de allí (escritos, grafiados, y/o ilustrados). Se ha logrado dar al principio a validar sustancia histórica. La ciudad, entendida como agrupación de personas organizadas y dependientes sobre un territorio físico, siempre ha buscado estructuras con las que engarzar y enraizarse a su propia naturaleza, ya sea ésta creada o atrapada.

A possible statement of the hypothesis approached along what turned out to
be a voluminous work: To understand the free "natural" spaces - or
with capacity for being - in the city as pieces of a "system", more
than as lungs, beautiful decorated or standard, it can help to strengthen to themselves
as well as to their role in the urban framework, a biological, social and
definitively urban role. We have tried to defend an idea, a form of looking, of
understanding - either to act or not-, more than a ruled, typified mechanism,
though along the way we have found so many types, so precisely ruled like
denaturalized, and so much more or less abstract ideas of green, and both of
them we have tried to channel in the shape of network.

To corroborate the validity of the hypothesis it is possible to say that the
option, simplifying, has been historical, and this grateful tracking has
returned multiple tracks to us to support it. With an idea of what was looked, we
were testing and confirming: - the permanency of the system along the history;
- and the permanency in the cities, and this type of permanency, if it is
fulfilled, for own definition must be amplification and ramification together
with the city in which it takes root. The order of the story has been
historical but simultaneously it was anchoring in the cities in which the
System blooms. With it we have tried to corroborate this permanency in the cities
throughout the time. It is a question of seeing how and why the city is
nourished of the system and vice versa.

The three volumes or parts in which we organize the text have to see basically with big
stages, let's say XIXth - XXth - XXIst century, though the transitions always
are blurry and juxtaposed. Above this compartmentalization superposed other in the
key of the observed cities, in fact some of them already concentrate the
attention of certain moments, more than any personage or trend; if there are no
cities to which to serve, there is no hypothesis that to check. And since it might
not be differently, there is also a parallel history of prominent figures, for
practical or theoretical action, projecting or managing. Possibly the principal
rich of this work is in the simultaneous deployment of “stories” and places
(times and spaces with own names), of here and of there (writings, drawings,
and / or illustrated). It has been achieved to give historical substance to the
principle for validating. The city understood as group of organized and
dependent persons on a physical territory, always has looked for structures
with which to connect and to take root to its own nature, either this one was created
or caught.
