The 3rd call for the 2017 grant for research in New York, promoted by the Arquia Foundation and the Royal Academy of Fine Art of San Fernando, closed on 5 May 2017, having received a total of thirty-five research projects. On Wednesday 5 July, the ceremony to award the grant to the architect Ángela Juarranz Serrano was held.
The jury of the third edition of the New York Grant -comprising Fernando de Terán (Director of the Royal Academy of Fine Art of San Fernando), Sol Candela Alcover (Patron of the Arquia Foundation), Juan Navarro Baldeweg (architect, Member of the Royal Academy of Fine Art of San Fernando) and Gerardo García-Ventosa (Director of the Arquia Foundation)- met on Friday, 9 June 2017 at the Arquia headquarters in Madrid.
The jury took a unanimous decision to award the 2017 grant for research in New York to the project The New York Factory. Architectural strategies laboratory. 1960-present, by Ángela Juarranz Serrano, an architect who graduated from ETSAM. As the runner-up, it also chose the project Leftovers. Exploring the byproducts of the grid, by the architect Marta López Marcos, and awarded the following special mentions: Living in the digital era. Collaborative models for the city of New York, by the architect Lucía de Molina Benavides; From Olivia Russell Sage to Jane Jacobs: women in international urban planning networks, by the architect María Cristina García González; Architecture from experience. For a teaching of space, by the architect Queralt Garriga Gimeno; and John Cage, the non-music of non-architecture, by the architect Miguel Guerra Mirón.
The winning project, The New York Factory. Architectural strategies laboratory. 1960-present, by Ángela Juarranz, forms part of her doctoral thesis, Architectural Strategies in the Art and Technology Assembly after the Happening, a theoretical and practical investigation that was born from the convergence of creative work and technological progress at the service of society, and which in the New York case shows a laboratory of architectural strategies evolving in the contemporary world.
