2004 Scholarships

Awards ceremony

The 2004 Scholarship award ceremony took place on Thursday 28 October in the Assembly Hall of the Escola Tècnica Superior d'Arquitectura de Barcelona. The event was attended by the architect Javier García-Solera, a member of the Scholarship jury for 2004, who gave a talk entitled "aquí posar títol", and the architect Carme Pigem, a member of the 2005 Scholarship contest jury, who presented the topic "Public-private, an intervention. Programmatic and physical definition of an affordable work environment".

2004 Jury Conference

JAVIER GARCÍA-SOLERA

Architect by the ETSA Madrid in 1984 and professor of Projects in Alicante since 1999.
His work has been awarded on numerous occasions, among which the COACV Award in 1987, 1992/93, 1996, 1999/00 and 2001/02; the Camuñas Award for young architects in 1996, the selection in the IV, V, and VI Biennial of Spanish Architecture in 1997, 1999 and 2001, as well as in the III Ibero-American Biennial of Architecture and Engineering in 2002.
He has won various architectural contest such as those for the selection of preliminary projects for the construction of:
. Office space for the Provincial Council of Alicante in 1986,
. Chemical Technology Center at the University of Alicante in 1995,
. Housing complex in the walled area of Madrid in 1989,
. Association of Architects in Elche in 1998,
. Quay and service building in the port of Alicante in 1997,
. Centre for Tourism Research and Technology of the Balearic Islands in 2000 and
. New Architecture Campus and CTT building in Sant Cugat del Vallès in 2001.
. He was the winner of the Europan contest in its 1988 edition.
He was awarded the CEOE award for Architecture 2002, a special mention in the FAD award for Architecture 2001 and a finalist in the FAD award for Interior Design 2002. His work Aulario III was proposed for the 2001 National Architecture Award and is part of the European selection for the 2001 Mies Van der Rohe Award.

CARME PIGEM

Carmen Pigem finished her studies at the School of Architecture of Vallès in 1987, and since 1988 she has been working with Rafael Aranda and Ramon Vilalta, now under the name of RCR ARQUITECTES in her home town of Olot. They were awarded with the National Award of Culture in Architecture 2005 from the Generalitat Catalunya, Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres 2008 from the République Française, Honour Members for the AIA American Institute of Architecture 2010, International Award 2011 "Belgian Building Awards" and Honour Members for the RIBA Royal Institute of British Architects 2012. Since 1989 they have been consultant architects for the La Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park and have taught Urban Planning and Landscape Architecture (1989-2001, Vilalta) and Projects (1992-2004, Pigem), having written essays on architecture and landscape. They have won different international contests (the last ones, the Parque del camino condal in Barcelona, the Waalsekrook Multimedia library in Belgium, the Soulages Museum in France, the Crematorium of Hofheide in Belgium and The Edge Business Bay in Dubai) and have received distinctions in the work among which three finalist works in the European Union Mies Van der Rohe Awards stand out. Some of the awarded works have been exhibited in different events (the last one, Global Ends in the Toto Gallery.Ma in Tokyo) and now published in different monographs, the last one 'El Croquis', Nº 162 (IV), RCR Arquitectes 2003-2012. Abstracción Poética, “AV”, Nº 137, “El Croquis”, Nº 138 (V), RCR Arquitectes 2003-2007 Los atributos de la naturaleza, “RCR” 3C Design, Corea.

2004 Contest Topic

Topic: 'Public-private, an intervention. Programmatic and physical definition of an affordable work environment'

The definition of a program capable of giving access to equipped work spaces, that can be rented for very short periods of time (hours), should be proposed. It will be necessary to reflect on its viability from all aspects: social need, real demand, diversity of forms of use, possibilities of management, financing, exploitation.

Architectural Tour

The architectural tour of the city of Barcelona took place on Wednesday 27 October 2004. The architects Carlos Ferrater and Benedetta Tagliabue collaborated as guides.
