The Arquia Foundation, in collaboration with the Royal Academy of Fine Art of San Fernando, has announced a grant for the development of a research project to be carried out at a prestigious academic institution in New York, in order to provide the conditions and means to promote research projects in the field of architecture.

  • Requirements
  • The Arquia Foundation, in collaboration with the Royal Academy of Fine Art of San Fernando, has announced a grant for the development of a research project to be carried out at a prestigious academic institution in New York, in order to provide the conditions and means to promote research projects in the field of architecture.

    • Aim
    • A scholarship is announced, through a public contest, to carry out an innovative or research project in the field of architecture in New York City, which contributes to making the Royal Academy a platform and laboratory for international experimentation in Spanish architecture.
      The scholarship aims to promote research projects in the field of architecture by providing opportunities for their creation, development and communication, offering candidates the conditions and providing the means for their development as support for their efforts and initiative.
      The programme also encourages international mobility, understood as an enriching factor for personal development

    • Candidates
    • The following are eligible for the scholarship: architects with a degree from any of the Spanish Higher Technical Education Schools of Architecture, foreign architects with a residence permit and a degree obtained in Spain, and architects with a degree obtained abroad and approved in Spain

    • Call opening: 2 January 2020
      Registration period: 2 January to 31 March 2020
      Winners: July 2020
      Development of the scholarship: September 2020 to March 2021

    • The required documentation can be sent through the 'registration' form until the closing date of the call (March 31, 2020 - 12:00 pm, Spanish Peninsular time).

    Fernando de Terán Troyano

    Director of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando

    Fernando de Terán has been director of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando since 2014, a corporation in which he previously held the position of General Secretary.
    Doctor from the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura in Madrid (1966). He has directed town planning bodies or bodies closely related to urbanism in the Spanish Public Administration and in the Madrid City Council. He held the positions of Deputy Director General of Urbanism (1972), Technical Director of Planning of the Metropolitan Area of Madrid (1977-80) and Director of the Institute of Local Administration Studies (1985-87).
    Gold Medal for Town Planning from the Autonomous Community of Madrid (2000), and King Jaime I Award from the Generalitat Valenciana (2005), in the category of Urbanism, Landscape and Sustainability (...)

    Luís Fernández-Galiano

    Full member of the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts

    Architect, Professor of Projects at the School of Architecture of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (ETSAM) and Director of the AV/Arquitectura Viva magazine, as well as the architecture section in El País newspaper.

    Visiting critic at Harvard, Princeton and the Berlage Institute, he has held the Cullinan Professorship at Rice University. He has also been visiting scholar of the Getty Center in Los Angeles and has chaired the jury at the 9th Venice Architecture Biennale and the 15th Chilean Architecture Biennale.

    His books include La quimera modernaEl fuego y la memoriaSpain Builds and Atlas, arquitectura global circa 2000.

    Naiara Montero Viar

    Architect by the Superior Technical School of Architecture of Barcelona (ETSAB)
    Doctorate in Architecture (Cum Laude) with a European mention in a thesis on research areas in energy and the environment in architecture (ETSAB)
    Post-graduate course 'Interior e Interiores' by the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC)
    Training course of the Banking Business 2015 (Architects Credit Union Arquia).
    Stay at the University of College in Dublin (UCD) as a research member in the Energy research Group (2011) .

    Soledad Candela Alcover

    Board Member of the Arquia Foundation, as a non-voting secretary

    In 1986 she obtained the degree of Architect, specialising in building construction, from the Valencia School of Architecture. She was awarded the Final Dissertation Award by the Valencian Regional Ministry of Public Works, Urbanism and Transport.
    She continued her professional retraining in technical matters, valuations and appraisals, as well as in land legislation and intervention in heritage, which, together with the experience she has acquired, have enabled her to delve into and study Architecture in relation to society and the role of architects.
    Since joining the Official Association of Architects of the Valencian Community (C.O.A.C.V.), she has carried out numerous projects in her uninterrupted practice of the profession while occupying various positions within the governing bodies of the association structure.

  • Assessment criteria
    • It must be an innovative idea and provide a new working approach.

    • Potential impact. It must make a significant contribution in the field of architecture.

    • Feasibility, the research project must have clear and realistic goals.

    • Capacity, the applicant must possess consolidated knowledge and qualifications. They must also demonstrate their ability to successfully carry out the research project.

  • Assessment criteria
  • Applications will be evaluated by the jury, taking the following criteria into consideration:

    • Academic and professional CV of the applicant

    • Report of the project proposed for the grant

    • Level of English proficiency

  • Endowment
  • The scholarship includes an endowment of €18,000 divided into six monthly payments of €3,000 each.

    The Arquia Foundation will assume the travel expenses related to the trip to New York (a return air ticket), visa, ISSO Columbia Visiting Scholar (or similar) and the SEVIS I-901 (or similar). It will also provide the scholarship holder with medical coverage under the terms of the travel assistance policy taken out through the brokerage Arquia Banca Mediación Operadora de Banca Seguros Vinculado, S.A. and the contributions to Social Security, as appropriate.
