2003 Scholarships

Awards ceremony

The 2003 Scholarship award ceremony took place on Thursday 23 October in the Assembly Hall of the School of Optics and Optometry, University of Alicante, with the participation of architect Carme Pinós, who gave a lecture entitled 'Recent works', and the architect Javier García-Solera, a member of the jury for the 2004 Scholarship contest, who presented the topic 'Work, nature and leisure'.

2003 Jury Conference

IÑAKI ÁBALOS

Iñaki Ábalos (San Sebastián, 1956) is an architect from Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid (ETSAM), PhD in architecture and professor of architectural projects at the ETSAM. He was Kenzo Tange Professor (2009), and since 2010 he has been a visiting professor at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design (GSD). A founding partner of Ábalos&Herreros (1984- 2006) and Ábalos+Sentkiewicz architects, he has been a member of the scientific committee of the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) in Montreal (since 2005) and member of the board of directors of the Barcelona Institute of Architecture (since 2008). He is director of the Laboratory of Contemporary Landscapes and Techniques (since 2003), and in 2009 the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) granted him its international membership. He has taught at the Architectural Association (London), the EPF (Lausanne) and at the US universities of Columbia, Princeton and Cornell. He is the author of Le Corbusier. Rascacielos (Madrid City Council, 1988), Técnica y arquitectura (Nerea, Madrid, 1992) and Natural artificial (ExitLMI, Madrid, 1999), with Juan Herreros; and La buena vida (Gustavo Gili, Barcelona, 2000), the two volumes of Atlas pintoresco (Editorial Gustavo Gili, Barcelona, 2005 and 2007), of the monograph Alejandro de la Sota (Architects Credit Union Foundation, Barcelona, 2009; with Josep Llinàs and Moisés Puente), and editor of Naturaleza y artificio (Editorial Gustavo Gili, Barcelona, 2009).

JAVIER GARCÍA-SOLERA

Architect graduated from the ETSA Madrid in 1984 and Projects professor in Alicante since 1999.
His work has received many awads, like the COACV Award in 1987, 1992/93, 1996, 1999/00 and 2001/02; the Camuñas Award for young architects in 1996, the selection in the IV, V, and VI Spanish Architecture Biennial in 1997, 1999 and 2001, as well as in the III Ibero-American Architecture and Engineering Biennial in 2002.
He has won several architecture contests, such as those for draft selection for the construction of:
. Offices for the Provincial Council of Alicante in 1986,
. Chemical Technology Center at the University of Alicante in 1995,
. Houses in the walled area of Madrid in 1989,
. Association of Architects in Elche in 1998,
. Deck and service building in the port of Alicante in 1997,
. Centre for Tourism Research and Technology of Balearic Islands in 2000 and
. New Architecture Campus and CTT building in Sant Cugat del Vallès in 2001.
. He was the winner of the Europan contest in its 1988 edition.
He was awarded the CEOE award for Architecture 2002, a special mention in the FAD award for Architecture 2001 and a finalist in the FAD award for Interior Design 2002. His work Aulario III was proposed for the 2001 National Architecture Award and is part of the European selection for the 2001 Mies Van der Rohe Award.

2003 Contest Topic

Topic: 'WORK, NATURE AND LEISURE’

Maintenance of a Natural Park requires the creation of a small "Multipurpose House" with five offices, two secretarial areas, a meeting room, toilets and changing rooms, a small kitchen and dining room, an exhibition area, a storage area, with surfaces for each of these activities around 15-20 m2 (240m2). In addition, a 50m2 rest and visitor reception area and a garage for two all-terrain vehicles are planned, all on one floor (total 350m2).

City of Alicante's architectural tour took place on Wednesday 22 October 2003. Architect Javier Garcia-Solera collaborated as a guide.
