The Arquia Foundation, in collaboration with the Royal Academy of Fine Art of San Fernando, has announced a grant for the development of a research project to be carried out at a prestigious academic institution in New York, in order to provide the conditions and means to promote research projects in the field of architecture.

  • Requirements
  • The Arquia Foundation, in collaboration with the Royal Academy of Fine Art of San Fernando, has announced a grant for the development of a research project to be carried out at a prestigious academic institution in New York, in order to provide the conditions and means to promote research projects in the field of architecture.

    • Aim
    • Under a public tender, a grant will be awarded for carrying out an innovative or research project in the field of architecture in New York, which will contribute to making the Royal Academy an international experimental laboratory and platform of Spanish architecture.
      The grant aims to promote the completion of research projects in the field of architecture by providing opportunities for their creation, development and communication, giving candidates the conditions and providing the means for this in order to support their efforts and initiative.
      The programme also encourages international mobility, understood as an enriching factor of personal development.

    • Candidates
    • Top architects who graduated from any of the Spanish superior technical schools of architecture, international architects with a Spanish residence permit who graduated from a Spanish school and architects who graduated from an international school but whose degree has been officially approved in Spain.

    • Call opening: 1 February 2017
      Registration period: 1 February to 2 May 2017
      Winners: July 2017
      Development of the scholarship: September 2017 to March 2018

    • The required documentation can be sent through the 'registration' form until the closing date of the call (May 2, 2017 - 12 pm, Spanish Peninsular time).

    Fernando de Terán Troyano

    Director of the Royal Academy of Fine Art of San Fernando

     Fernando de Terán is director of the Royal Academy of Fine Art of San Fernando, where he previously held the position of Secretary General.
    He was awarded a doctorate from the Superior Technical School of Architecture of Madrid in 1966. He has led town planning departments or those that are closely related to town planning in the civil service and in the city council of Madrid. He has held the positions of Deputy Director of Town Planning (1972), Technical Director of Planning for the Madrid Metropolitan Area (1977-1980) and Director of the Institute of Local Government Studies (1985-87).
    In 2000, he received the Gold Medal for Town Planning of the Autonomous Community of Madrid, and in 2005 was awarded the King Jaime I Prize by the Valencia Country Council, in the category of Town Planning, Landscape and...

    ACADEMIC TRAINING
    In 1986 she obtained her degree in Architecture, specialising in building, from the Higher Technical School of Architecture of Valencia. She received the End-of-Career Project Award by the Regional Ministry of Public Works, Urban Planning and Transport.
    Continuous professional recycling in technical matters, valuations and assessments, as well as in land legislation and heritage intervention, which, together with her experience, have enabled her to know and study Architecture in relation to society and the figure of the architect.
    PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

    Gerardo García-Ventosa

    Director of the Arquia Foundation, as non-voting secretary

     Gerardo García-Ventosa López (Barcelona 1951), an architect who graduated from the Superior Technical School of Architecture of Barcelona, having specialised in building in 1977 and town planning in 1979.
    He has a doctorate in architecture (cum laude) from the same school, whereby his thesis focused on the work of Doménech i Montaner (1993).
    Degree (Excellent) in Legal and Forensic Architecture from the Pompeu Fabra University (2003).
    Non-tenured/associate professor at the Superior Technical School of Architecture of Barcelona (1974-1990).
    Professor at the Massana School of Interior Decoration in Barcelona.
    Deputy Director, Superior Technical School of Architecture of Barcelona (1984-87).

  • Assessment criteria
    • It must be an innovative idea and provide a new working approach.

    • Potential impact. It must make a significant contribution in the field of architecture.

    • Feasibility, the research project must have clear and realistic goals.

    • Capacity, the applicant must possess consolidated knowledge and qualifications. They must also demonstrate their ability to successfully carry out the research project.

  • Assessment criteria
  • Applications will be evaluated by the jury, taking the following criteria into consideration:

    • Academic and professional CV of the applicant

    • Report of the project proposed for the grant

    • Level of English proficiency

  • Endowment
  • The grant includes an endowment of 18,000 euros split into six monthly instalments of 3,000 euros.

    The Arquia Foundation will cover the travel expenses to New York (a return ticket by plane), visa, ISSO Columbia Visiting Scholar (or similar) and the SEVIS I-901 (or similar). It will also provide the intern with medical cover under the conditions of the travel insurance policy contracted through the brokerage firm Arquiseguros, and the relevant Social Security contributions will also be made.
