VII Arquia/Next Festival 2020

Our world is constantly changing. Whether due to political conflicts, unequal societies, environmental disasters or pandemics; our planet and humanity face the need for continuous transformation and adaptation. The 7th edition of Festival Arquia – organised by Gonzalo Herrero Delicado – has collectively examined how the emerging architecture of Spain and Portugal is facing these challenges. An opportunity to reflect on those practices that are facing these challenges through risk and innovation, resulting in a new radical architecture.

The festival took place on 21 and 22 October with an extensive programme of debates, conversations and presentations with the architects and studios selected in the arquia/next programme, as well as other guests including Anupama Kundoo, Carme Pinós and Peter Cook. The virtual platform that hosted the festival, designed by Space Popular and inspired by the city of Barcelona, also served as a framework to host parallel activities such as arquia/next and arquia/scholarships programme gallery, and a new documentary directed by Javier Peña that brings us closer to Barcelona's most radical architecture.

Arquia/Next Award

AMAO estudio, by Ander Bados Sesma and Maria Montenegro Vazquez was awarded the Arquia Next Award consisting of €15,000 for the work 'Housing for teachers in the rural community of Llullucha, Cuzco'. The jury decided to award this proposal for its generosity, as it brings about a qualitative change in the social conditions of the communities in which it is developed, highlighting respect for the landscape, as well as the application and ingenuity in the use of typologies, techniques, materials and local knowledge in the project. Finally, the humanistic character of its architecture and the intellectual perspective applied were highlighted.

Arquia/innovation Award

Déborah López Lobato won the Arquia Innovation Award consisting of €3,000 for her work 'MONUMENTS'

It stood out to the jury as it 'introduced an experimentation space going from theoretical aspects to material and experiential aspects, providing a critical answer to key contemporary, environmental, social and political conditions and issues.'

The company Pareid, represented by Déborah López Lobato, was awarded the Arquia/Innovation Award for its project Mo(un)ments.

As of 21 October, you will be able to visit the exhibitions by the winners of the arquia/scholarships programme, and see the 24 finalist works of the arquia/next programme explained by their authors using your computer, mobile phone, tablet or virtual reality helmet. The platform designed by Space Popular and inspired by the city of Barcelona, has been designed to explore the possibilities of architecture in the virtual space, providing a new means for reflection and exchange of ideas on the future of our experiences in the digital world.

Documentary Turning Point

Premiere 21 October

Directed by Javier Peña, it is the first in a series of documentaries that portray different Spanish cities and will bring us closer to Barcelona's most radical architecture through the eyes of a generation of architects who began in 2008, in the midst of the financial crisis and who, in a vague context, learnt to reinvent themselves and offer new opportunities. With Anna and Eugeni Bach, Maio, David Steegmann, Adrià Escolano, Vora Arquitectura, Bonell + Dòriga, Raúl Sánchez, Arquitectura G, FLEXO Arquitectura, Carles Enrich, La Col: cooperativa de arquitectos y Harquitectes.
