Manuel Aires Mateus was born in Lisbon in 1963. He graduated from the "Faculdade de Arquitectura / U.T.L" in 1986. He began collaborating with Ar. Gonçalo Byrne in 1983 and started to develop his own projects with his brother Francisco in 1988. The Aires Mateus studio was initially created by the two brothers, taking a space in the studio of Ar. Gonçalo Byrne during his early years. The increasing scale of projects, forced them to establish in an autonomous space, to respond to the growing demands of work. Since then the scale and number of projects has been proliferating, resulting in several national and international architectural awards. The visibility of their work resulted in invitations to participate in conferences and teach in several institutions. Among which we can highlight the Graduate School of Design in Harvard, the Accademia di Architetura in Mendrízio as well as others in Portugal. The structure currently includes two studios, both in Lisbon, having done several collaborations with local studios for the realization of projects of international level.
